Large-scale operation by the fire brigade: fire in Leipzig apartment block!
On August 24, 2025, around 10 p.m., there was a major fire department operation on Johannes-R.-Becher-Straße in the Lößnig district of Leipzig. A fire on the sixth floor of an apartment block led to heavy smoke, which is why the emergency services were alerted immediately. The Leipzig fire department immediately started rescuing people and fighting the fire.
The emergency services used positive pressure fans to effectively remove smoke, while a turntable ladder was used to check the upper floors. Johannes-R.-Becher-Straße was completely closed during the entire fire service operation. One person was injured due to smoke and taken to hospital. The exact cause of the fire, which is suspected to be in a storage room, is currently unclear and the Leipzig criminal police have started investigating.
Fire investigation
It is noteworthy that a similar fire was registered in the same building in December 2024, which could further strengthen the police investigation.
Incident with irritant gas on a regional train
This incident is not the only one that has bothered the fire department in recent months. On November 30, 2023, around 6 p.m., the fire department was called to a mass casualty incident (MANV) on Georg-Schumann-Straße, at the Möckern S-Bahn stop. Irritant gas was sprayed on a regional train, which led to over a dozen people complaining of respiratory irritation and calling emergency services.
The fire department was on site with 13 ambulances and 14 fire engines. In this case too, the police investigated to clarify the background to the incident. We will continue to report as soon as new information about the investigation and the causes of the fires becomes available.
