Lübeck and Lufthansa: Sixty years of high-flying partnership!
The Hanseatic city of Lübeck and the airline Lufthansa are celebrating an impressive anniversary: there has been an official sponsorship between the city and the company for 60 years now. This partnership was launched on May 12, 1965 and has now become a striking symbol of Lübeck's connection to aviation. A Lufthansa Airbus A340-600, which proudly bears the name “Lübeck”, is an important element of this tradition. According to LN Online, the aircraft with the registration D-AIHF is the sixth Model that bears this name and it has achieved remarkable achievements since its commissioning in 2004.
The Airbus has already flown to 94 different destinations and carried over 2.3 million passengers on around 9,300 flights. The aircraft was temporarily stationed in northern Spain, particularly during the corona pandemic. Despite the symbolic name, the plane cannot land in Lübeck because the runway at Lübeck-Blankensee Airport is too small.
Partnership and pride of the city
Mayor Jan Lindenau and City President Henning Schumann were proud of the long-standing partnership. Schumann emphasized that it was a special honor that the city of Lübeck was made visible worldwide through the aircraft. On the occasion of the 60th anniversary, the two city leaders presented the crew of the passenger plane with a marzipan present as a sign of appreciation, which is a regional specialty for the city of Lübeck. This gesture underlines the close and warm connection between the city and the airline, which will continue to exist in the future.
Lufthansa has committed to halving its net CO₂ emissions by 2030 compared to 2019. To achieve this goal, various measures are being implemented to reduce and offset emissions, including investments in more efficient aircraft and sustainable aviation fuels. This shows Lufthansa's commitment to sustainably connecting people and cultures while also reducing the ecological footprint, as Here Lübeck reports.
Lufthansa’s “Schleswig-Holstein fleet” includes not only the “Lübeck” aircraft, but also other cities such as Segeberg, Flensburg and Kiel. These regional connections strengthen the identity and connection of the people in the region with aviation and create a network that has an impact far beyond national borders.
