Lübeck celebrates the 177th folk festival: tradition, music and great highlights!
The 177th Lübeck Folk and Remembrance Festival was ceremoniously opened on Friday afternoon. Mayor Jan Lindenau and Janine Belli, the new chairwoman of the Showmen's Association of Lübeck and the surrounding area, cut the symbolic red ribbon on the Ferris wheel. The more than week-long festival began on June 20, 2025 and will take place in the parking lot at the music and congress hall until June 29, 2025, as hl-live.de reports.
The opening of this year's folk festival received a positive response from numerous guests on the first day. Particularly noteworthy is the musical supporting program, which was organized by the German Youth Brass Band, among others. Mayor Lindenau took the opportunity to emphasize the importance of traditions such as the folk festival and the accompanying folk festival parade.
Highlights and events
The folk festival offers numerous highlights, including the spectacular fireworks that can be admired on Friday evenings, as well as a large parade on Sunday, June 22nd, 2025, which starts at 2 p.m. at Gustav-Radbruch-Platz. The parade moves through the old town all the way to the Holstentor and attracts not only locals but also many tourists. The parade route runs along various streets, including Falkenstrasse and Holstenstrasse. The exact process looks like this:
- Aufstellung und Start in der Falkenstraße
- Gustav-Radbruch-Platz
- Burgtorbrücke
- Große Burgstraße
- Königstraße
- Wahmstraße (rechte Fahrbahnseite)
- Kohlmarkt
- Holstenstraße
- Holstentorplatz
- Willy-Brandt-Allee (rechte Fahrbahnseite Richtung Parkplatz)
On the day of the parade, Falkenstrasse and other streets along the route will be temporarily closed from 10:30 a.m. to ensure everything runs smoothly. During the festival, city traffic will also have to adapt with changed routes to guide visitors. Further information about travel times, stops and routes is available online at Here Lübeck.
Tradition and support
Supporting showmen during the challenges of the pandemic was a central theme in the mayor's speeches. Lindenau emphasized that such events not only serve to strengthen regional traditions, but also provide economic stimulus that is crucial for the local community.
Another traditional part of the festival is Wednesday Savings Day, when prices for rides and stands are reduced. This helps ensure that the festival remains accessible to all ages and walks of life and brings the community together.
The Lübeck Folk Festival is not just a celebration, but rather an important institution that keeps the city alive and in which the joy of being together is celebrated.
