Lübeck celebrates 60 years of the sponsorship with Lufthansa: A plane with pride!

Lübeck, Deutschland - On June 2, 2025, the Hanseatic city of Lübeck celebrates a very special anniversary: 60 years ago, an official godfather between Lübeck and Lufthansa was launched. This partnership manifests itself in a plane that has been named the city since then. It is currently the Airbus A340-600 with the identification D-Aihf, the sixth aircraft that bears this honorary name. On the occasion of this anniversary, the Mayor Henning Schumann and Mayor Jan Lindenau brought the crew to a present from Lübeck, which symbolizes the tradition of the city. The importance of this partnership was emphasized by Schumann, who emphasized responsibility in modern mobility. Mayor Lindenau was proud of the naming and thanked Lufthansa for her many years of commitment to sustainable air traffic, which is becoming increasingly important.

The official godfather is not only recognized for the city of Lübeck, but also a sign of the connection between aviation and regional identity. It illustrates how important it is to preserve local traditions in a global context. The long partnership between Lufthansa and Lübeck is also the responsibility that is anchored in the aviation industry, especially with regard to sustainability and ecological developments.

sustainability and social responsibility

based on the common responsibility for a sustainable future, Lübeck refers to the 17 goals for sustainable development (Sustainable Development Goals, SDGS), which were set by the global community in the 2030 Agenda. These goals promote socially, economically and ecologically sustainable development and serve as a timetable for a decent life and the preservation of natural livelihoods. Lübeck plays a central role here, because the city has been a Fairtrade city since 2011 and thus the first city in Schleswig-Holstein.

A steering group consisting of members of civil society, politics, retail as well as the city administration and the hotel industry, coordinates the activities and projects in the field of fair trade. These initiatives aim to implement the SDGs at the local level and to strengthen the city in their responsibility for sustainable development. Since 2024 there has also been a coordination office in the city administration that is specifically dealing with local development policy and is promoting the promotion of fair trade and sustainability in Lübeck.

The strengthening of cooperation between cities such as Lübeck and companies such as Lufthansa is essential for the implementation of these goals. Together they can become pioneers in sustainable development and thus have a positive impact on the environment and society.
