Altenburg is planning a museum revolution: a lighthouse project for the region!

A significant realignment of the museum infrastructure is imminent in Altenburg. The master plan for the development of the museums on the Altenburger Schlossberg was presented by museum director Roland Krischke, district administrator Uwe Melzer (CDU) and mayor André Neumann (CDU). The aim of the plan is to develop the region's cultural heritage into a supra-regional goal. Under the title “Princes in the Sleeping Beauty Castle”, the master plan comprises over 100 pages and outlines a future that will combine both education and tourism - a real beacon for the region, as [Welt](https://www.welt.de/regionales/thueringen/article256210734/masterplan-altenburger-museen-sollen-leuchtturm- Werden.html) reports.

The focus is on the planned “Lindenau Campus”, named after the founder of the Lindenau Museum, Bernhard August von Lindenau. This should not only connect the existing museums more closely with each other, but also create a museum-based educational landscape. The idea of redistributing the castle and playing card museums for better understanding is part of the holistic concept. A newly planned city history museum on the castle grounds, based on private collections, is also being considered.

Education and digitalization

A central point of the master plan is the planned educational offerings for universities, museum associations, schools and the general public. Digital educational offerings should also be integrated in order to reach a broader audience. The district administrator emphasized the investment of “a lot of passion” in this future-oriented planning. Mayor Neumann expressed the wish that visible progress should be evident by the State Horticultural Show in 2030. The castle's renovation backlog is currently estimated at half a billion euros, which underlines the urgency of the project.

A further step towards implementing the master plan is the transfer of the castle property to a foundation in order to generate capital for necessary renovation measures. In order to operate the museums jointly in the future, the aim is to establish a special-purpose association.

Redesign of the Lindenau Museum

In addition to the master plan, there are also plans to redesign the entrance area of the Lindenau Museum. On February 10, 2023, the preliminary design by the architectural firm Hoskins Planning GmbH was selected as the best solution after six architectural firms took part in the process. The criteria for the redesign include accessibility, harmonious integration into the castle garden and an aesthetic connection with the historic building, as altenburgerland.de reports.

The evaluation team, consisting of architects, monument conservationists and representatives of the city society, clearly defined the requirements for the building. This includes modern air conditioning technology, new sanitary facilities and barrier-free access. The renovation of the Lindenau Museum is supported by a Bundestag resolution from November 2018, which earmarks 24 million euros for the modernization, flanked by a further 24 million euros from the Free State of Thuringia.

The year 2023 marks an anniversary: 175 years after the opening of the first art museum and the associated art school in the 19th century, Altenburg looks forward to a promising future as a center for culture and education.
