Leipzig's sports weekend: Finnish dancers conquer the stage!

A colorful sports weekend culminates today in Leipzig with exciting competitions and a celebration of international friendship. Under the motto “Gymnastics is always possible”, a diverse program will take place in the Stadium of Peace and on the market square, bringing together both local and international talent. As the city prepares for the stadium gala on Saturday, rehearsals are in full swing.

At 12:15 p.m., 177 women from 23 Finnish clubs will present their large formation entitled “Hyvää päivää, Leipzig”. This performance promises to be a highlight of the gala, which will also host athletes from Sweden who have previously practiced on the pitch. The German Gymnastics Federation (DTB) fun dance competition also attracts many spectators. It will take place on the market square from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., with the final scheduled for 3 p.m. Here the participants show choreographies in styles such as jazz, modern dance, musical and hip-hop.

German youth championships and sporting competitions

Another highlight of the day is the German Youth Stone Throwing Championships, which will be held at the Stadium of Peace in Leipzig-Gohlis. Young athletes compete with a 15 kilogram stone that can fly up to ten meters. There are also junior competitions in slingshot ball, as reported by the Motor Gohlis Nord stadium club.

By mentioning the slogan “Gymnastics is always possible,” the gymnasts do their best even in uncomfortable situations, such as riding on the tram. This positive attitude reflects the sense of community that characterizes the event.

International connections between Germany and Finland

The cultural connections between Germany and Finland are further strengthened by the Association of Finnish-German Associations (SSYL), which is committed to promoting the German language and culture in Finland. The SSYL not only arranges student exchange places for Finnish young people between the ages of 15 and 18, but also looks for host families for German students who want to visit Finland. Every year around 100 students use this opportunity to get to know the country and its culture, which promotes exchange between cultures ssyl.fi.

Additionally provides information German-Finnish Review about news and developments in both countries. The magazine is published four times a year and covers topics ranging from cultural projects to educational issues to current events. The March 2025 issue was dedicated, among other things, to a ski tour through Lapland and a cultural project in Chemnitz.

This weekend celebrates not only sporting achievements, but also the important cultural connections between countries and their people, and represents an example of friendship and cooperation in action.
