Leipzig's Karl-Heine-Canal: Fight against invasive aquatic plants begins!
From Monday, June 16, 2025, comprehensive mowing work begins in the Karl-Heine Canal in the west of Leipzig. These measures are necessary to maintain the ecological functions of the water and to ensure the public use of the canal. The work that is supposed to continue until June 27 is particularly directed against the different -leaved thousand leaf (myriophyllum heterophyllum), an invasive aquatic plant that has spread strongly in the waters of Leipzig in recent years, such as TAG24 , the work is carried out with two special amphibian vehicles. These vehicles are equipped with height -adjustable incisors and can edit the vegetation on a width of up to five meters and a depth of approximately 1.6 meters under water.
goal of the mowing work
A central goal of these mowing campaigns is the removal of the invasive plant growth in order to enable the return of insects into the water. The harvested clippings are transported to the bank with a raft, where it can drain. The material is then re -utilized at central transshipment sites. This annual measure for water entertainment is always adapted to vegetation development to maximize effectiveness.
causes of distribution
The rapid spread of aquatic plants, especially the different -leaved thousand blades, is favored by several factors. High temperatures and the use of art fertilizers and manure on adjacent fields help to grow even faster. These circumstances represent an additional challenge that needs to be mastered in order to maintain the water quality and usability of the Karl-Heine Canal.
The upcoming mowing work is therefore an important step for the ecological stability and the use of leisure of the channel. Further details about the infrastructural measures and their future prospects are communicated by the city of Leipzig in the course of the work.
