Leipzig counts cyclists: Eight new measuring points for more traffic transparency!
The city of Leipzig has installed eight new bike counting points as part of an initiative to promote cycling. This measure aims to identify long-term trends in cycling and enable a fair distribution of roads between cars and bicycles. A look at the numbers shows that in August 2023 the Schleußiger Weg alone was used by 180,000 cyclists. This illustrates the growing interest in environmentally friendly means of transport in the city.
The new measuring devices are located at strategically important locations. These include, among others, the Pausnitz Bridge, the Neue Linie/Die Linie intersection and Hans-Weigel-Straße. The locations cover everyday routes as well as urban fringe areas and leisure routes, which enables comprehensive recording of cycling traffic. This increases the total number of counting points in Leipzig to 19, while there are an additional 24 counting points for car traffic.
The technology behind the measurements
The counting points work via induction loops embedded in the ground, which record bicycles regardless of the material of the frame. This technology offers precise recording of cycling traffic and feeds the data into an interactive dashboard that provides daily insights into cycling traffic. As the ADFC Leipzig explains, this dashboard provides information about the busiest routes, the busiest days of the year and monthly developments in cycling traffic. This means that the number of cyclists in Leipzig is tracked and evaluated in real time.
The first counting points were set up on Manetstrasse in 2017. In order to ensure the collection of further data, four additional locations are already planned for the first half of 2026, including Dittrichring and Käthe-Kollwitz-Straße. This shows the city of Leipzig's commitment to creating a bicycle-friendly infrastructure and using the associated necessary data to support urban planning and politics.
A new look at cycling
The expansion of the measurement network not only increases transparency, but also creates a sound basis to advance urban development in the interests of sustainable mobility. Information obtained from the new measuring points is used to analyze cycling traffic and supports politicians in taking targeted measures to promote cycling.
The data from eleven of the new locations can currently be viewed online. Particularly striking is the Sachsenbrücke, which emerges as the front runner among the measuring points. This proves the high importance of cycling in Leipzig and the need to continue to promote it.
By installing new bike counting points, the city of Leipzig is showing that it is taking into account the growing importance of bicycle infrastructure and is relying on modern technology to collect comprehensive, current and relevant data. This will not only help to further increase cycling traffic, but also promote sustainable mobility in the city.
