Leipzig becomes the mecca of the goths: 32nd Wave-Gotik-Treffen starts!
Leipzig will become the center of Gothic and alternative culture over the Pentecost weekend when the 32nd Wave-Gotik-Treffen (WGT) attracts numerous visitors to the city. An estimated 20,000 “goths” have already made their way to the city to take part in the various events. The main locations of the festival are the Clara Zetkin Park and the agra Messepark in Dölitz.
In total, the organizers expect around 200 bands to perform on over 50 different stages and venues. The musical palette ranges from pop to punk and reflects the colorful diversity of the gothic scene. A particularly large number of commitments came from well-known artists such as PIL, Anything Box and Camouflage, who will perform during the festival. The opening band, Alphaville, ensures a special start.
Cultural highlights and variety of costumes
The costumes of the participants are another highlight of the trek. From Victorian ladies-in-waiting to steampunks and fantastic mask wearers, the scenery is extremely colorful and unique. In addition to the concerts, special events also take place, including concerts in churches, cemeteries and in the “Pagan Village” with a medieval market, which also offers an insight into alternative culture.
Ticket prices for the event vary. A day ticket can be purchased at the main train station or in agra for 170 euros, while entry to the Heidnisches Dorf costs 25 euros (5 euros for young people up to 17 years and free for children under 12). The medieval market at the Moritzbastei is accessible for just 5 euros.
Special guests and lectures
In addition to the musical performances, festival visitors can expect an exciting supporting program with prominent guests. The well-known criminal biologist Mark Benecke will give a lecture on Monday at 1:30 p.m., while best-selling author Sebastian Fitzek will offer a reading on the same day at 12:00 p.m. Other artists and scientists also pay attention to the WGT with performances and lectures.
The wide variety of artists includes German acts such as WITT, LONG TALL TEXANS from the UK, as well as international representatives such as American artist Nikolas Schreck and other notable artists.
The Wave-Gotik-Treffen is not just a festival, but an important cultural event that brings together a community of like-minded people who share a passion for music, art and alternative lifestyles. Under the umbrella of the events, a unique atmosphere is created that transforms Leipzig into a multicultural center over the Pentecost days. The event has secured a permanent place in the calendar of many participants over the years and continues to attract new fans.
