Leipzig burns: Hottest city of Saxony calls for clearing!

With a surface temperature of 35.43 degrees Celsius,

Leipzig is the hottest city in Saxony on heat days. This was published on June 12 by the German Environmental Aid (DUH) as part of its new Hitzecheck. Over half of the Leipzig population is therefore affected by extreme heat, which is due to the high level of sealing of the city. Almost 45 % of the city area are sealed, which significantly favored heat development. The Green Group in the Leipzig City Council has prompted this to submit a competitive application to be reversed.

The city's existing heat action plan is considered inadequate. Therefore, the Greens demand more measures to remove and green. For these projects, 4 million euros are already planned in the upcoming budget. In addition, the faction calls for the implementation of a fundamental decision for the net zero sealing by 2030. In particular in areas close to the city center, the degree of sealing is significantly higher, which tightens the problem of overheating.

reactions to the Hitzecheck

The results of the Hitzecheck from Duh show that over 12 million people in German cities are exposed to extreme heat lettings. In an analysis of 190 cities with more than 50,000 inhabitants, a "heat -fuel index" was created for the first time. This indexes the loads within the municipalities and takes into account both high temperatures as well as dense seals and inadequate green areas. A total of 31 cities have received a red card for high heat load, while 131 cities received a yellow and 28 cities a green card for medium or low heat loads. This evaluation is based on satellite data and was carried out in collaboration with the Potsdam Luftinte Umwelt Planung GmbH.

To improve the situation, Leipzig initiated a funding program for natural-based solutions that aim to support deflection and greening measures. The proposed refrigeration competition is based on the successful Dutch competition "Tegelwippen". This is intended to suggest cities within Germany to actively participate in combating the heat load.

The debate about the heat load in Leipzig and other cities increases, because the topic affects not only the well -being of the citizens, but also the quality of life in urban areas as a whole. Further efforts are necessary in order to create a balance in good time and to minimize the health risks caused by extreme heat.
