New living space for children: Innovative daycare center opens in Leipzig!
On August 14, 2025, the replacement daycare building at Kändlerstrasse 1 in Lausen-Grünau was ceremoniously handed over. After a construction period of 18 months, the modern facility offers space for a total of 165 children, including 45 places for crèche children and 120 kindergarten places. The official opening of the integrated children and family center (KiFaZ) was also part of this festive ceremony. The old daycare building had serious deficiencies, particularly in the areas of fire protection and electrical systems, which is why a new building was unavoidable. The demolition was carried out carefully while preserving existing trees, with some demolition material being reused for the new foundation.
The design of the new building comes from “wittig brösdorf architects” from Leipzig. Project management was in the hands of LESG Leipzig mbH, which is responsible for the development, development and renovation of building areas. Particularly noteworthy are the load-bearing walls, ceilings and facades, which are made of wood. Concrete was only used for the stairwell and elevator shaft. The children access the sculptural stairs from the upper floor to the newly designed outdoor area, which offers shade with arcades and a green roof area.
Sustainability in focus
At the opening, building mayor Thomas Dienberg emphasized the importance of sustainability and climate-adapted construction. The new building is not only functional, but also an example of innovative building practices. With a total cost of around 8 million euros, the project relies on environmentally friendly materials and a pleasant indoor climate that meets the needs of the children.
In addition to the construction work, a competition for art in architecture will be held. The artist Marcus Jansen will install a tree sculpture entitled “Hula Hoop” on the forecourt of the daycare center, which will serve as an eye-catcher and point of identification for the children and the surrounding area.
The location of the new daycare center in the Lausen-Grünau district was strategically chosen. It is located at the western head of the property and at a junction of the connecting paths. The daycare center and the KiFaZ are connected to each other, with the forecourt serving as a meeting point and orientation for community members. Car parking spaces and a delivery area for the kitchen are located on Kändlerstrasse.
With the opening of the new building, a further step was taken to improve early childhood care in Leipzig, which is particularly important given the high demand for childcare places. Overall, the new building is a positive signal for the future of child care in the region.
