KUMBRA Festival: Diversity of culture in the Burgenland district conquers hearts
The KUMBRA literature festival in the Burgenland district, which is organized by Lion Hartmann, cultural manager at the Office for Education, Culture and Sport, is about to reach its highlights. The festival, which takes place from August to December in numerous locations deep in the heart of Saxony-Anhalt, brings together a large number of cultural actors and is based on the motto: “a few become many and many become a common cultural narrative”.
Hartmann, who has lived in the Burgenland district since 2015 and is intensively involved with the regional cultural landscape, has created over 60 events with the KUMBRA Festival that aim to make cultural diversity tangible for all citizens. The opening will take place on September 5th, 2025 at the Capitol in Zeitz with the well-known author Peggy Patschke. The reading by Ronald Reng and an event at the Naumburg Higher Regional Court with the setting of the “Moabit Sonnets” will also be bright spots in the program.
Inclusive offers for everyone
A particular focus is on inclusion. The festival works closely with the coordinator for cultural education and the Burgenland district representative for the disabled and aims to create a wide variety of literary offerings. This also includes the integration of projects such as the ESF project “Local Participation Management” and the “Local Alliance for People with Dementia”.
Special book readings in simple language are also planned, which will be offered at the same time as sign language translation. As part of these readings, the book “Honey in the Head” will be presented on November 23, 2024 in the Galerie im Schlösschen in Naumburg. Another event will take place on December 3, 2024 at the Lützen Museum, where the book “Pretty Best Friends” will be presented. A children's lecture by the inclusion activist Raúl Krauthausen, where he and Adina Herrmann will present the book "When Ela conquered space", is also scheduled for November 12, 2024 in the Arche Nebra. All events are free and barrier-free.
Cultural challenges and perspectives
Despite the positive development, Hartmann also sees challenges: Since the fall of the Wall, the dismantling of full-time structures has been a persistent problem that has hindered the development of regional cultural structures. There is a need for increased communication about the accessibility and content of culture in order to reach and promote more people.
The support from the administration and political actors who show cultural understanding motivates Hartmann in his work. The numerous volunteers who shape cultural life in the region are further crucial partners for the success of the festival.
The KUMBRA literature festival therefore offers a platform that goes far beyond literature and makes an important contribution to cultural networking and inclusion in the Burgenland district.
