Roebuck saves itself by swimming: Fire brigade frees animal from pool!

On July 6, 2025, the Machern fire department in Leipziger Land was called to a special operation. A roe deer fell into a swimming pool and was unable to escape on its own. The fire brigade was alerted with the keyword “rescue large animals”. Nine emergency services immediately set out to help the helpless animal.

The operation went smoothly. The fire department and police worked hand in hand to free the roe deer from the water. After the animal was rescued from its predicament, it was given a health check, which fortunately revealed no injuries. The buck could then be released to rest in an adjacent field in consultation with a hunter. The entire operation lasted around 45 minutes, which underlines the efficiency of the Machern fire department.

Experiences and further assignments

Local fire chief David Kolodziej reported that this was not the first incident of this kind. A week ago, firefighters freed a deer that had become wedged in a gate. Similar situations occur again and again as deer often find themselves in dangerous situations. They are now freed backwards from the bars without the need for heavy technology. These methods have proven to be particularly effective.

There was also an incident in the Nerchau area in which a deer got stuck in a gate and had to be rescued by the fire department. These operations show how important a quick and well-coordinated response by emergency services is to ensure the well-being of wild animals.

The rescue operation of the roebuck from the swimming pool is an impressive example of the solidarity and efficiency of the fire department in the region. It is reassuring to know that even in such extraordinary situations, competent helpers are there to help animals in need and return them safely to their natural environment.
