Mysterious field fire near Holzhausen: Fire brigade on a large scale!

Today, June 29, 2025, there was a large field fire near the Holzhausen quarry pond in the east of Leipzig. According to lvz.de, the fire broke out at around 1 p.m. in a field between Seifertshainer Straße and Naunhofer Landstraße. The fire brigade arrived with a large contingent consisting of twelve fire engines to fight the inferno.

Emergency crews were immediately dispatched to the scene and additional firefighters were called in to contain the fire. Particularly affected was an unharvested grain field of around 14 hectares that was on fire. The extinguishing work was extremely difficult due to changing gusts of wind, reported Tilo Melzer, fire chief of the Zweenfurth Volunteer Fire Department.

Extensive measures to protect residents

The fire brigade took extensive protective measures to protect neighboring forest areas and arbors from the flames. Thanks to the quick intervention, the flames were prevented from spreading to neighboring fields, which meant that a residential property and a commercial property could also be brought to safety. The smoke was visible as far as the Kleinpösna gravel pit and was noticeable across large parts of the city, including sightings from Leipzig Airport and the surrounding bathing lakes.

Despite the challenging conditions, two helpers had to be treated by the emergency services during the operation. The cooperation between the various fire departments, the rescue service as well as a farm from Engelsdorf and the local building yard was praised as exemplary.

Borsdorf's mayor Birgit Kaden was also on site and provided the emergency services with drinks and food. Numerous comrades from various neighboring fire departments were involved in the extinguishing work, including Zweenfurth, Borsdorf and Panitzsch.

To date, no information is available on the exact cause of the fire or the size of the affected field. The fire department also did not provide any specific information in this regard, which continues to leave the population uncertain about the exact background to the incident. However, firefighting efforts have been intensive and firefighters remain on duty to tackle the last embers.

The situation remains tense and the firefighting and clean-up work is expected to take some time. Further information on developments is expected as emergency services continue to work on site.
