Horses and tradition: Thousands celebrate the Leonhardi ride in Holzhausen!

The Holzhauser Leonhardi ride, a tradition with over 400 years of history, once again attracted numerous spectators this year on June 9, 2025. The first documented mention of the move dates back to 1612. The event is considered an important symbol of the connection to the homeland, respect for animals and the maintenance of customs, as pnp.de reports.

This year's celebration took place in Teisendorf and attracted thousands of spectators who attended the colorful spectacle. The ambience exuded the charm of bygone times and shows how traditions are upheld in the region. The festive atmosphere was enhanced by the presence of diverse horses and buildings, often considered living traditions.

Diverse program as part of the Whitsun festival

The Leonhardi ride was part of the Whitsun festival in Holzhausen, also known as Beer Tent Week, which has been taking place since June 7th and runs until June 15th. Mayor Thomas Gasser opened the festival on the first Saturday with brewery boss Christian Wieninger. A varied program was offered to the guests. These included, among others:

  • Eselrennen am Pfingstsonntag, 8. Juni, ab 13.30 Uhr (23. Mal)
  • Kaltblutfest am Sonntag, 15. Juni, ab 13 Uhr (27. Mal)
  • Feldgottesdienst nach dem Leonhardiritt
  • Kreisbauerntag Berchtesgadener Land am Donnerstag, 12. Juni
  • Bierzeltabend mit „Alpenbrand-Böhmischen“ am Freitag, 13. Juni
  • Bierzeltstimmung mit „Bääm & Brass“ am Samstag, 14. Juni
  • Festzug der Schützen des Rupertigaus am Sonntag, 15. Juni

The event attracts not only locals but also visitors from neighboring regions. The expectations for the number of spectators are high, and the organizers hope for a lively exchange during the numerous program offerings.
