Experiences in nature: Day of the Young Nature Guardians in Saxony!

On Saturday, June 14, 2025, “Young Nature Watchers” Day will take place in Saxony. Under the motto “Out into Nature”, girls and boys aged seven to eighteen are given the opportunity to actively explore the nature in their surroundings. The event is organized by the “Saxon State Foundation for Nature and Environment” and offers a varied program that is aimed at the curiosity of the young participants.

The children and young people are equipped with magnifying glasses, landing nets and identification books so that they can discover forests, ponds and meadows on their own. Radio Leipzig reports that the focus is on knowledge of the region's flora and fauna. Information about wild animals such as lynx, wolves and wild cats is provided, as well as valuable practices for protecting habitats in the Free State. Another important part of the program are practical tips, for example on topics such as first aid in the forest.

Project JuNa and environmental education

The “Young Nature Guardians” Day is part of the JuNa project, which has been taking place since 2017 in cooperation with various institutions such as the Saxon State Ministry for Energy, Climate Protection, Environment and Agriculture (SMEKUL) and the Lower Nature Conservation Authority of the Central Saxony district. The aim of the project is to improve the professional support and documentation of experiences in the field of nature education. LaNU highlights that two action guidelines have been developed for JuNa supervisors, which provide valuable information about the design and implementation of nature conservation-related programs.

The first action guide contains a curriculum of all JuNa offerings, including a basic course of 70 hours that imparts basic knowledge about nature conservation, as well as an advanced course with a further 70 hours that deepens specific topics. Flexibility in design depending on regional characteristics makes it possible to adapt the content to the interests of the participants.

In addition, the second action guide presents various practical modules to make the program exciting and varied. These initiatives help young Saxons not only discover nature, but also develop a deeper understanding of nature conservation.
