Open churches and exciting tours for Open Monument Day!

On September 14, 2025 it will be “Open Monument Day” again in Germany. Under the motto “Valuable: priceless or irreplaceable?” A variety of historical sites open their doors to offer interested visitors unique insights. This is an opportunity to appreciate the importance of cultural heritage and at the same time to recognize the work of the German Foundation for Monument Protection, which promotes the preservation of monuments. Many churches in Dresden and Leipzig take part in this special day and create a varied program.

An impressive selection of churches awaits visitors in Dresden, including the Trinity Church, which was built from 1891 to 1894 and was extensively renovated in 2019-21 after severe destruction in 1945. It opens from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and offers guided tours at 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m., although entry is requested in the form of a donation for the renovation of the belfry. The St. Luke's Church, which was built between 1899 and 1903 and burned down in 1945, is also open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and invites you to take a tour of the church from 11 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.

Variety of programs in Dresden

The Kreuzkirche, known as the main Protestant church in Saxony, is open until 6 p.m. and offers guided tours of the organ and the belfry after the service from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Further highlights include the tours of the Bühlau cemetery, which is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and the late baroque Röhrsdorf village church, which is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Lockwitz Castle Church and the Löbtau Peace Church are also on the program and offer various guided tours and exhibitions.

Numerous churches in Leipzig are also part of the event. The Emmaus Church in Sellerhausen opens its doors from 10 a.m. and offers a service. In the Lukaskirche Leipzig, a district festival runs parallel to the Open Monument Day, which takes place from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Philippus community has also come up with something special: from 11 a.m. there will be a monument tour, workshops on monument preservation and a silent film event with live organ music at 8:30 p.m.

Interactive experiences and other events

An app developed specifically for Open Monument Day allows visitors to optimize their experience. With this application, users can plan tours of otherwise inaccessible locations, enjoy concerts within historic walls and take themed bike tours. Events and locations can also be saved and reminder functions can be used. The app offers an interactive map with information about opening times, programs and the history of the monuments and thus supports monument preservation.
