DOK Leipzig 2025: A festival of films and stories from all over the world!
The anticipation for DOK Leipzig 2025 is already palpable, as the renowned documentary film festival is just around the corner. From October 27th to November 2nd, a total of 252 film productions from 55 countries, selected from over 3,000 submissions, will be shown in the Saxon metropolis. DOK Leipzig is not only the oldest documentary festival in the world, but also a place where important social issues are addressed.
The opening film, “Writing Life: Annie Ernaux Through the Eyes of High School Students,” will premiere at CineStar on October 27 at 7 p.m. As lvz.de reports, this year's program will focus on topics such as art and war in Ukraine, dreams in war and home in the Caucasus embossed. Particularly noteworthy is the retrospective “Un-American Activities,” which is dedicated to American film in the GDR.
Competitions and awards
A total of 78 films will compete for the Golden and Silver Doves, which offer prize money of 55,000 euros. The competitions are divided into several categories: the German Competition, the International Documentary Film Competition, the International Animated Film Competition and an audience competition. Awards will be presented on November 1st in the Schaubühne Lindenfels. A total of 30 world premieres can be found among the films submitted.
What is particularly striking is the focus of the films on socially relevant issues. In the International Documentary Film Competition, for example, themes of cultural preservation and human influence on living spaces are present. The animated film competition highlights activist approaches and their importance in times of crisis. This thematic diversity is also reflected in the German competition, which deals with connections between the German past and present.
Diverse events and accessibility
The festival also offers numerous events that go beyond the film program. The DOK Industry connects film producers and creative people at around 50 events. There are special offers for students as part of DOK Education, and the Animation Night in the Schaubühne Lindenfels promises particularly magical moments.
There are free films for all viewers, which are shown in the main train station and in the Polish Institute. The DOK Neuland project offers free events in the Heilandskirche Westkreuz and in the Museum of Fine Arts. Accessibility is also a top priority: many of the cinemas are step-free and offer wheelchair spaces that can be booked online, as well as selected films with audio descriptions.

Tickets are available now - a single ticket costs 10 euros, reduced tickets cost 8 euros and children only pay 5 euros. A season ticket is available for 75 euros (45 euros reduced).
