New sports center for Böhlitz-Ehrenberg: hall of superlatives opened!
On July 3, 2025, the first excavator bite took place for a new three-field sports hall in Böhlitz-Ehrenberg, Leipzig. The ceremony was led by sports mayor Heiko Rosenthal, school mayor Vicki Felthaus and building mayor Thomas Dienberg. The hall is described as a lighthouse project and is intended to close the gap for sports halls suitable for competitions in the region, which can offer between 199 and 1,000 spectator seats. There is currently such a hall in Leipzig with seating for 500 spectators, which will be supplemented by the new building, which will significantly benefit the training and competition conditions for local sports clubs.
Vicki Felthaus emphasizes that the new hall not only enriches physical education classes, but will also create additional exercise opportunities for schools. The hall is particularly important for handball in the local club, as it also has a focus on roller hockey, which has a close community in Böhlitz-Ehrenberg. The roller hockey club Aufbau Böhlitz-Ehrenberg e.V. plays in the 2nd women's Bundesliga, and the hall is equipped with a special roller hockey board.
Architectural details of the sports hall
The new three-field sports hall will be realized as a single-story building and will not have a basement. The hall area will be designed with a maximum height of 12.10 m and a floor area of 46.25 m x 38.75 m. The 500 spectator seats are provided on a set of stands, which are naturally lit by side skylights. The hall's side wing accommodates further functions such as changing rooms, sanitary facilities as well as a multi-purpose room and weight room.
A special feature of the sports hall is its sustainable wooden construction. The use of prefabricated wooden building elements is intended to shorten construction time and ensure environmentally friendly construction. In addition to the wooden structural elements, the supporting structure also includes the grandstand construction, which plays a central role in the use of the hall. This innovative construction method is supported by PICHLER Ingenieure GmbH, which is also responsible for the structural planning and was designed by the Kersten Kopp architectural firm from Berlin.
Sustainable aspects and future use
In addition, the hall will have a roof with photovoltaic modules and greenery, which will contribute to a resource-saving energy supply. The most advanced sports floor installed in the sports hall not only provides an excellent playing surface, but also integrated LED marking lines, providing users with modern playing conditions.
The realization of the construction project was planned as an individual measure in Leipzig's sports facility planning in the 2024 sports program. Further implementation requires funding and the city council’s building resolution. Heiko Rosenthal emphasizes the urgency of the sports infrastructure project in Leipzig. The new sports hall will not only be a place for sports and competitions, but also a center for community and education in Böhlitz-Ehrenberg.
