Leipzig in construction chaos: Karl-Liebknecht-Straße is closed!

Traffic in Leipzig is currently heavily affected by construction sites. More than 50 construction sites are active, which on average are being processed in parallel. The weekly number of construction sites is between 50 and 60, which can pose a significant challenge for commuters and drivers. From the last week of June, new construction sites and traffic disruptions have been announced, which will further aggravate the traffic situation. As the LVZ reported, Karl-Liebknecht-Straße will be closed from June 28th.

The closure extends between Scharnhorststrasse and Niederkirchnerstrasse and is used to renovate the tram tracks. Drivers must expect diversions that lead into the city via Richard-Lehmann-Straße and August-Bebel-Straße or Richard-Lehmann-Straße and Zwickauer Straße. Out of town, the diversion also takes place via August-Bebel-Straße and Richard-Lehmann-Straße. The construction site is expected to last until the end of September.

Construction site overview

In addition to Karl-Liebknecht-Straße, construction work on the drinking water pipe will also be carried out on William-Zipperer-Straße (Leutzsch) from June 23rd. This one-way street is closed in the direction of Landwaisenhausstraße until July 4th. Another construction site will start on June 30th on Zweinaundorfer Straße in Mölkau, where the sidewalk will be closed and a stationary traffic light system will be set up.

  • Karl-Liebknecht-Straße: Sperrung ab 28. Juni bis Ende September.
  • William-Zipperer-Straße: Einbahnstraße bis 4. Juli.
  • Zweinaundorfer Straße: Baustelle ab 30. Juni bis 11. Juli.
  • Oststraße (Anger-Crottendorf): von 30. Juni bis 4. Juli wechselseitiger Verkehr.
  • Leipziger Straße (Böhlitz-Ehrenberg): Sperrungen ab 30. Juni bis 9. August und 5. Juli.

The construction site on Leipziger Straße affects both track construction and work on the drinking water network, which requires further diversions for bicycle and car traffic. Those too verkehrslage.de informs about a construction site at the Zeppelin Bridge on the B87, where bridge work will close both directions until December 11, 2026.

These extensive construction site activities have led to heavy traffic congestion and an increased risk of accidents in recent weeks. Among other things, drivers must expect the risk of slipping due to winter conditions, while obstacles on the road also pose a potential hazard.

The ongoing construction work in Leipzig clearly shows how important it is to receive regular information about construction sites and traffic disruptions in order to navigate safely and quickly through the city. The coming weeks could be a test of patience for many vehicle drivers. It is therefore advisable to check alternative routes and traffic information before starting your journey.
