BMW Leipzig: 1.5 million electric vehicles – MINI Countryman E inspires!

On June 11, 2025, a significant milestone in the history of the BMW Group was reached at the Leipzig plant: the 1.5 millionth fully electric vehicle, the MINI Countryman E, left the assembly line. This event is clear evidence of the growing importance of electromobility within the BMW Group and the central role that the Leipzig plant plays in this. The MINI Countryman E is characterized by an output of 150 kW (204 hp) and has an electricity consumption of 17.4 to 15.7 kWh/100 km. In addition, it produces no CO2 emissions.

Production of the MINI Countryman E took place in May 2025 and the vehicle has already been handed over to a customer in Portugal. The Leipzig plant is thus consolidating its status as an important location for the electrification of the BMW Group's vehicle fleet. Plant manager Petra Peterhänsel emphasizes the high level of manufacturing flexibility, which makes it possible to respond optimally to customer wishes.

Electrification and production history

The history of electromobility in the BMW Group began in 2013 with the start of production of the fully electric BMW i3. This success was supplemented in 2014 by the BMW i8 plug-in hybrid sports car. The Leipzig plant not only produces BMW and MINI brand vehicles with all drive types, but also produces high-voltage batteries for automobile production.

A total of 109,513 battery-electric vehicles were sold in the first quarter of 2025, an increase of 32.4% compared to the same period last year. This shows that almost every fifth vehicle delivered by the BMW Group has a fully electric drive. The WLTP range of the MINI Countryman E is between 462 and 423 km, making it suitable for both urban and longer journeys.

The Leipzig plant not only represents an important building block in the BMW Group's electric offensive, but also shows how the company is adapting to the increasing demand for environmentally friendly vehicles. Further information can be found on the BMW Group website.
