Bach Festival Leipzig 2025: Goethe's Faust meets Bach's masterpieces!

On June 9, 2025, this is exciting Bach Festival Leipzig with a very special program. This year's theme is all about musical theater. Intendant Michael Maul presents a highlight of the festival with “Bachs Faust”, which celebrates the 500th anniversary of the traditional restaurant “Auerbachs Keller”. This historical site, which Johann Wolfgang von Goethe mentioned in his famous wine cellar scene from “Faust”, becomes the original location for the performance.

“Bach’s Faust” combines Goethe’s dramatic work with the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. Maul emphasizes that the musical elements of Bach's compositions fit Goethe's texts perfectly. The extraordinary idea sees Bach not only as a composer, but also as a musical accompanist and commentator on the first part of “Faust”. This concept is further deepened by the performance at the historical location, where the audience can immerse themselves in the world of Faust.

The performance and cast

The production takes place in the traditional “Auerbachs Keller”, where guests can expect a culinary highlight in the form of a cordon bleu menu before the performance. The event itself lasts about 120 minutes and contains an abridged storyline. Burghart Klaußner takes on the role of Doctor Faustus, while Frank Arnold appears as Mephisto. They are supported by Lea Ruckpaul and an impressive ensemble that makes the connection between music and drama deeply tangible with chorales such as “Christ ist erstanden” and “Dies irae”.

The performance dates are set for June 15th and 16th, 2025 and June 17th. Details about each performance can be found on the festival's official website.

A festival of transformation

The Leipzig Bach Festival 2025 has the motto “Transformation”. In this context, the festival illuminates transformation processes in the work of Johann Sebastian Bach and presents both traditional and experimental concert formats, including an innovative augmented reality experience. Prominent artists such as John Eliot Gardiner, Miriam Feuersinger and the renowned St. Thomas Choir Leipzig are included in the festivities, with the latter opening the festival.

The interplay of music, theater and a historical context makes the Bach Festival a unique experience that not only appeals to lovers of classical music, but also inspires a broader public about the art and cultural history of Leipzig.
