A72 between Leipzig and Chemnitz: New route opens on Saturday!
A new section of the A72 motorway towards Chemnitz will be opened to traffic on Saturday, July 19, 2025. The roadway between the Leipzig-Süd junction and the Zwenkau junction will then be passable, as MDR reports. However, only two of three lanes are initially available as construction work continues to be carried out in the median area.
The complete connection of the Zwenkau junction to the A72 marks important progress in the expansion of the motorway between Leipzig and Chemnitz. The official exit from the A72 to the B2 for road users coming from Leipzig will also be activated. However, restrictions and temporary closures may still occur at the Zwenkau junction in terms of traffic flows.
Progress in closing the gap
Work to close the gap between Rötha and the A38 is also underway, although this is not expected to be fully completed until 2026. This represents a delay of 20 years compared to the original plans. During the construction period, which is expected to last until 2028, a comprehensive noise protection concept will be implemented to counteract noise pollution in the region.
In addition to the roadway renovations, a section of approximately two kilometers of low-noise asphalt will be laid on the new route, which will contribute to a significant reduction in road noise. This was implemented as part of the construction work on the Leipzig carriageway in order to relieve the burden on residents along the A72, as TAG24 highlights.
The release of the new section is a step in the right direction and shows that infrastructure projects in the region are making progress. However, road users should expect disruptions at the Zwenkau junction for the time being while the remaining work continues.
